Isabel Hospice CEO summits mountain five with Janice - Isabel Hospice

You may have been following Janice’s inspiring 12-month 12-mountain adventure! We caught up with our  CEO Helen Glenister who accompanied Janice for climb number five. In a remarkable display of determination and community spirit their journey unfolded on the challenging slopes of Gilder Fawr, featuring demanding stretches of ascent and treacherous terrain. The duo’s courage and fortitude were put to the test as they overcame physical and mental obstacles that led them to reflect upon the challenges their patients in the community face each and every day.

Helen reflected “ I didn’t initially know what I was letting myself in for.” She shared with us her training ahead of the day which involved “getting my boots on and walking up and down a road with a slight incline, ten times” along with her previous experience of climbing Ben Nevis, which saw Helen have to tie her boots together to keep the sole from falling off! A few days before the climb Janice sent Helen details on the route. Helen said this included “warnings that walkers should be comfortable tackling steep rock”. When asked how Helen found the climb, she answered “to be honest I don’t know how I got myself into this, it was challenging but I’m so proud I did it and embraced the challenge. I will never ever give in, however hard things are, come what may”.

The climb commenced with a three-mile walk to the starting point, they encountered many demanding stretches of ascent, along with scree (loose stones underfoot that are challenging to scramble over). After reaching the summit, Helen said “I asked if their was an easier way down?   Janice and another walker had to let me know that the best way down was via a known and very steep route!”. They descended the mountain together, navigating a significantly intimidating section known as ‘ The Devil’s Kitchen’, such a comforting name. They reached the end at 6:55pm. Helen recalls the time as it allowed them to savour a much-needed ice cream before the local shop closed its doors at 7 o’clock.

When asked if she would undertake such an endeavour again, Helen hesitated slightly and was thoughtful, but ultimately replied a resounding “Yes – I certainly would do it again!”.

During the climb, Helen and Janice couldn’t help but reflect on the challenges faced by patients that are supported by Isabel Hospice. in their daily lives. She said, “Some of our patients will say they’ve got a challenge of getting through one day, and here we were dealing with this challenge on this day—overcoming obstacles.” The experience deeply resonated with them both, highlighting the poignant and relevant role they played in offering patients support, to make those challenges they are facing each day, feel possible to overcome.
